Wedding Cake Alternatives and New Trends

Updated: Mar 1

The traditional wedding cake is becoming less and less popular for many reasons. Here is some of my favorite new trends and ideas to substitute the traditional over the top and expensive wedding cake.

Wedding cake alternatives and why this new trend is becoming so popular:

Hello, My name is Elizabeth Jones of EJ Events Wedding & Event Planning. The reason why the traditional, over the top wedding cake is becoming less popular is because it is boring, expensive, and results in wasted cake! Not everyone likes cake, so why not have options for your guests to choose from?

Whether you prefer traditional or trendy, this guide will help you learn some of the alternative options and why they are better for your budget as well as your guests experience!

Cake Downsize

A great way to have options for your guests, but still keep some tradition with your wedding cake is to have a small cake. 1 tier or close to it. This will allow you to have alternative dessert options and still be able to do the cake cutting with your partner.

This trend is well-known for being an anniversary activity for your first year of marriage. Many couples use this 1 tier cake for the tradition of "cake cutting" and then save the rest of the cake to enjoy once again on their first anniversary. Of course, this cake would need to be kept in a freezer until then.

Cake Alternatives

Cake alternatives are a great way to include all of your guests, especially the ones who prefer other desserts over cake. Great options for this are:

  • Mini Cupcakes

  • Donuts

  • Cookies

  • Cup Desserts

  • Mini Pies

  • Cheesecake Bar

  • Cake Pops

  • Macaroons

  • Chocolate Covered Strawberries

The options are endless! You could have a dessert wall, popular for donuts, a dessert tower with different options on every level, or a dessert display on trays and stands. This kind of display of desserts can also be paired with a small wedding cake for the cake cutting.

Dessert Alternatives

You could, of course, throw out the idea of desserts all together. This is your wedding and you should do what makes you happy! If you want to have a mashed potato bar, go for it! Of course, having fun food options can be paired with desserts as well. Here are some fun dessert alternative options:

  • Mashed Potato Bar

  • Pretzel & Cheese Bar

  • Mac & Cheese Bar

  • Pizza Bar

  • Loaded Fries Bar

Fake Cake

Have you ever heard of a fake cake? A fake cake is made of styrofoam, all but one slice! You can have that huge, gorgeous, and over the top wedding cake of your dreams! For a much smaller price.

Bakery's will decorate these styrofoam cakes to look completely real, and have one actually real slice inside this styrofoam cake. This allows you and your partner to have your cake cutting and eat a slice together, but not serve the rest of the cake to your guests. You can then serve cake alternatives or have a sheet cake (non decorated 1 tier cake) for your guests to enjoy. The process of cutting a styrofoam cake and serving sheet cakes will save you money!

The wedding cake tradition is becoming less popular because it is expensive and we have all seen it! Your guests want something fun, delicious, and unique. Do whatever speaks true to you and your partner when making decisions about your wedding. To learn more expert tips to help you plan your wedding, click the button below! Happy Wedding Planning!
